Bristol is a city in South-West England. St.Paul's a poor district
mainly inhabited by immigrants, was where the first major riots in 1980-1981
took place.
Isambard Brunel and the Bristol Riots

The Bristol Riots were a reaction to disappointing parliamentary reform.
Brunel, having secured the Clifton bridge contract, was visiting his friends
in the city and became caught up in the riots. At one stage he helped to
rescue the Town Hall's silver plateacross the roof of the building. The
town suffered extensive fire damage and the City Fathers shelved the suspension
bridge project!

Isambard gave evidence at the court martial of Colonel Brereton who, as
commander, had been negligent in not turning out the local militia to protect
the town.
