Isambard Brunel and the Bristol Riots

The Bristol Riots were a reaction to disappointing parliamentary reform. Brunel, having secured the Clifton bridge contract, was visiting his friends in the city and became caught up in the riots. At one stage he helped to rescue the Town Hall's silver plateacross the roof of the building. The town suffered extensive fire damage and the City Fathers shelved the suspension bridge project!
Isambard gave evidence at the court martial of Colonel Brereton who, as commander, had been negligent in not turning out the local militia to protect the town.
